Japan’s Qualified Invoice: Required Items and How to Write One
For freelancers and businesses invoicing in Japan. The generator below checks the required items as you type.
Nothing is sent. Data is stored only in this browser.
Tax and currency settings
Rates vary by country and item. Defaults are examples only; check the rate that applies to you.
In the print dialog choose "Save as PDF" as the destination. Use A4 (or Letter) and turn off headers and footers.
Documents live only in this browser and disappear if you clear browser data. Keep PDFs and backups of important ones.
This tool helps you lay out documents; it is not tax advice. Check rates and rules with your tax authority or an accountant.
The six required items
- Issuer’s name and registration number (T + 13 digits)
- Transaction date
- Description, marking reduced-rate (8%) items
- Total per tax rate (excl. or incl. tax) and the rate
- Consumption tax per rate
- Recipient’s name
The document title does not matter; a delivery note or receipt with these items also qualifies. Retail, restaurant and taxi businesses may issue a simplified invoice that omits the recipient and shows either the rate or the tax amount.
Rounding
Consumption tax is rounded once per rate per invoice (down, half up or up). Rounding each line and adding them up is not allowed. This tool rounds once per rate.
Registration number
Corporations use “T” + their 13-digit corporate number; sole proprietors get “T” + 13 digits (not their My Number). You can look numbers up on the National Tax Agency’s public site.
