FAQ
Do premiums differ by insurer?
Earthquake insurance is run jointly by the government and private insurers, and insurers generally use the GIROJ base rates, so premiums are almost the same for the same conditions.
How much cover can I buy?
30–50% of the fire insurance amount, up to ¥50 million for the building and ¥10 million for contents. It must be added to a fire insurance policy.
Can discounts be combined?
No. Only one of the base-isolation, seismic grade, seismic diagnosis or building-year discounts applies, and proof is required.
What are Class I and Class Ro?
Class I is mainly steel or concrete buildings; Class Ro is mainly wooden. Wooden buildings certified as fire-resistant or quasi-fire-resistant count as Class I and pay less.
