Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Expiry, Print Size and Scanning Tips
Why a free QR code can suddenly stop working, and how to make codes that last (checked 2026-10-29).
Static and dynamic QR codes
| Static (this site) | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains | The URL or text itself | A provider's short link that redirects |
| Expiry | None | Depends on the plan or free trial |
| Change destination later | No (make a new one) | Yes |
| Scan statistics | No | Yes |
| If the provider shuts down | Unaffected | Stops working |
QR codes themselves never expire. They usually stop working because a dynamic code's redirect server stops: a trial ends, a subscription lapses or the service closes. For flyers, signs and packaging that stay around for years, static codes are the safer choice.
Want to change the destination later?
Put a URL on a website you control (for example https://yourdomain/qr/menu) into a static code. Redirect that page whenever you need, without reprinting.
Print size guide
- Leave a quiet zone of 4 modules around the code (DENSO WAVE FAQ). This site adds 4 modules by default.
- DENSO WAVE's FAQ gives about 0.17 mm per module as the minimum for a typical laser printer. Allow for phone cameras and distance: 0.3–0.5 mm or more per module is safer (this site shows the size at 0.5 mm per module).
- Longer content means more modules and a finer pattern at the same size. For business cards, shorten URLs or drop fields.
- Signs scanned from a distance need to be larger. Always test-scan at the real distance before printing.
Choosing error correction
| Level | Recoverable (approx.) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| L | 7% | Screens, long content |
| M | 15% | Normal print (standard) |
| Q | 25% | Outdoors, factories |
| H | 30% | Heavy wear, small damage |
If a code will not scan
- Dark pattern on a light background? (Inverted or pale codes fail in some apps)
- At least 4 modules of clear margin? (No borders or text too close)
- Printed too small or blurred?
- Glare from glossy paper, curved surfaces, dirt
- Has the linked page been deleted or moved?
