Japan Hazard Map Check: Flood, Landslide and Tsunami Risk by Location
Pick a place on the map to read flood, storm-surge and tsunami depth and landslide warning zones from Japan's official Hazard Map Portal, with points to review on fire (flood) and earthquake insurance. Free, no sign-up.
Results on this site are estimates built from Japan's Hazard Map Portal data and published insurance base rates. Disasters can exceed the assumptions. Confirm evacuation and insurance decisions with your municipality's hazard map, your insurer or agent, and professionals.
What is checked
| Hazard | Meaning | Insurance |
|---|---|---|

| Storm surge | Flood depth when typhoons raise the sea level | Flood cover in fire insurance |
| Tsunami | Flood depth in the largest-class tsunami | Earthquake insurance |
| Landslide (special) warning zones | Areas at risk of debris flows, slope failure and landslides | Rain: flood cover; earthquake: earthquake insurance |

FAQ
How do you check the hazards?
We read the map images published by Japan's Hazard Map Portal (flood, storm-surge and tsunami depth, landslide warning zones and house-collapse zones) at the point you choose and within 30 m of it, and match the colors to the official legends.
Is my address sent anywhere?
There is no address box. You choose a place from a prefecture and municipality list stored on your device and on the map. The map and hazard images load from GSI servers, so GSI can see which map area you view. This site never receives your coordinates or the amounts you enter.
If the point is "outside", is it safe?
Not necessarily. The maps cover major rivers and coasts; flooding from small rivers and drains, irrigation ponds, earthquake shaking and liquefaction are not included, and disasters can exceed the assumptions.
Can I drop flood cover from my fire insurance?
If the point is outside the zones and the building sits on high ground, some people drop it to save money. Drainage flooding and landslides can still occur outside the zones, so check the municipal hazard map and your area's flood rating class first.
Does fire insurance cover tsunami?
No. Damage from earthquakes, eruptions and tsunami (including fire and landslides caused by earthquakes) is covered only by earthquake insurance.
